Friday: Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tourney at RRCD

A Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tourney is set for tomorrow night (Friday, November 9) at 8 pm at the Rochester Recreation Club of the Deaf, 1564 Lyell Avenue. It is hosted by the Central States Bowling Association of the Deaf. The entry fee is $30 with a 100% giveout and you can also attend for $10 if you’re not playing. Appetizers will be provided. Sunday: ASADV Fundraiser at People’s Pottery

New Devices Open Communications for Deaf

Five years ago the staff at Ken Gan’s auto repair shop told him they needed to find a better way of communicating with customers who were deaf.

“I said, let me go shopping _ I’ll buy you whatever’s out there,” said Gan, of Rochester, N.Y., which has a significant community of deaf people.

For three months, Gan came up empty-handed. There wasn’t anything in the market to facilitate face-to-face communication in a situation such as a shop or office.

Euchre Tournament Fundraiser Set for January 12

The Rochester Deaf Rotary is teaming up with the Rochester Recreation Club of the Deaf to sponsor a Euchre Tournament Fundraiser on Saturday, January 12, 2008. It takes place at RRCD’s clubhouse at 1564 Lyell Ave., with registration at 7 pm and tournament at 7:30 pm. Prizes depend on the number of players. Admission is $20 per person in advance, $25 at the door. Proceeds will go to Rochester deaf community projects. Reserve your space now; January 5 is the deadline. Interpretek Featured in Today’s Paper

The local interpreting firm Interpretek, in its first year as a Rochester Top 100 company, was featured in today’s Democrat and Chronicle.

The article, by Ana Fermin, consists of nine questions and answers with an Interpretek official who went unnamed in the online edition. The article discusses the company’s expansion into Florida and touches on Video Relay Services and Video Remote Interpreting, along with other topics.

Kevin Mowl Mentioned in Seattle Newspaper

Kevin Mowl, son of Rochester School for the Deaf Superintendent Harold and Mary Mowl, was mentioned in an article in Sunday’s Seattle (Wash.) Post-Intelligencer, which can be seen HERE.

The article is about Capt. Patrick Horan and his recovery from brain injuries sustained in the Iraq war. Kevin Mowl is mentioned only briefly, but the article gives a sense of what he and his family must be going through and contains a link to the website that contains daily updates on his recovery.

This month’s list of activities of the Lilac Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf contains a special event — Thanksgiving Dinner at Old Country Buffet at Southtown Plaza in Henrietta. It takes place on Saturday, November 17 at 5 pm and all are welcome.

DEAR Gets Ready to Gobble Gobble

Deaf Elders Around Rochester (DEAR) will hold their Thanksgiving Celebration at the Rochester Recreation Club of the Deaf (RRCD) on Wednesday, November 14 from noon to 3 pm. The ‘dinner’ will be served at noon following DEAR’s regular morning activities. Non-members can join in the fun, but an RRCD spokesperson said if you’re not a regular at the meetings, you’ll be asked to pay for the meal (under $10). DEAR meets twice a month on the second and fourth Wednesdays at RRCD from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Click HERE to learn more.
