HLAA/ROCHESTER PRESENTS APRIL 1, 2008 PROGRAMS

Daytime meeting “BUILDING A CIRCLE OF SUPPORT” with Barbara Isaman-Bushart, MSW 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.Is that you in the corner, frustrated and upset at family gatherings, staff meetings, and bridge games because you cannot understand what the others are saying? Perhaps they are frustrated too, not knowing how to include you in the conversation.

Barbara Isaman-Bushart says that hearing loss is a relational experience. Others in your environment must now find new ways of communicating with you, the deafened person. If you feel uncomfortable sharing your needs with coworkers, friends, and relatives while living with limited communication, not knowing how or afraid to ask for support—this presentation is for you.

Barbara gives practical advice on building a “circle of support” from the people in your life.

Barbara is a late deafened adult whose adjustment to hearing loss led her into social work and a degree from Roberts Wesleyan College. She has worked with clients who are hard of hearing, Deaf, and blind. Currently employed by Unity Health, Barbara is a member of the HLA/Rochester legislative committee.

(This presentation is Audio looped).

Evening meeting “I HAVE MY HEARING AID—NOW WHAT?” with Angela Monaco, AuD. 7 to 9 p.m.

Acquiring your first hearing device is a major life step. In your ear is an expensive little piece of equipment which must be looked after regularly to maximize its helpfulness.

Dr. Angela Monaco, owner of Crystal Clear Hearing in Gates, notes that wearing aids is an active, daily task. Once the initial hurdle of being fit is cleared, you, the new hearing aid wearer, must be aware of many chores and preventive maintenance to obtain the best hearing from your investment. Dr. Monaco will discuss some dos and don’ts to keep your hearing aids up and running.

A fellow of the American Academy of Audiology and member of the American Tinnitus Association, Dr. Monaco earned her bachelors and masters degrees at the University of Colorado and her Au. D. at Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

(This presentation is audio looped, sign language interpreted, real time captioned)

Both programs are presented at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, corner of East Avenue and Westminster Road, across from George Eastman House. Enter door at rear of church.

Free. Refreshments available.

NTID Awarded $2.2 Million for Math Study

NTID Receives $2.2 Million to Understand How Math is Learned

March 13, 2008 - A four-year, $2.2 million grant to study the way deaf and hard-of-hearing students learn math has been awarded to the Center for Education Research Partnerships at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

The grant was awarded by the National Institute for Child Health and Development at the National Institutes of Health.

“Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, including those with cochlear implants, frequently lag behind their hearing peers in mathematics achievement,” said Marc Marschark, an RIT Professor and CERP director. “This is an incredible opportunity to work with students, parents and teachers to directly link research and practice.”

More than 1,000 students – as young as age 5 to college students – will be tested in the United States and Scotland to evaluate math skills, cognitive abilities and motivation. The project is a collaboration with the University of Aberdeen, where Marschark holds an appointment in the School of Psychology.

“Our research here has shown that deaf learners of all ages learn differently than hearing students,” Marschark said. “There’s the assumption that if you remove the communication barriers in the classroom, that deaf students learn just like hearing students. But a lot of the research shows that’s not true.”

Three research associates will be employed as a result of the study, Marschark said.

“If you want to improve education for deaf students and hard-of-hearing students, you have to start before they get to college,” said Alan Hurwitz, CEO of NTID and dean and vice president of RIT for NTID. “Understanding how information is processed and learned will better enable educators to provide the best possible strategies to have their students succeed.”

The study comes after research showed deaf students generally lag behind their hearing peers in math courses. This study will determine how language fluency, cultural expectations and cognitive functions such as memory relate to learning mathematics.

The information gained will be shared to help develop practices in deaf education.

“Many of us here at NTID are excited at the prospect of a research project of this magnitude related to mathematics,” said Vince Daniele, professor and chairperson of the NTID Department of Science and Mathematics. “It is long overdue. Improving mathematics education, whether the students are deaf or hearing, is a critical undertaking in this age of technical opportunities.”

Plans in Full Swing for NTID 40th Reunion

Milestone Anniversary Reunion Planned for NTID

Rochester, N.Y. - More than 6,000 deaf or hard-of-hearing students from across the country have graduated from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf since the college opened its doors 40 years ago. Plans are in full swing for the college’s 40th Anniversary Reunion on June 26 to 28, 2008.

NTID was created by Congress to provide post-secondary education in technological subjects for deaf and hard-of-hearing students – a population underserved in those fields, and underrepresented in related careers.

In 1968, 70 deaf and hard-of-hearing students made up the first class of NTID, a college of Rochester Institute of Technology. Today, 1,343 students from 49 states and 13 countries attend RIT/NTID, and study, live and socialize with 14,700 hearing undergraduate students on RIT’s Rochester, N.Y., campus.

NTID holds reunions every five years; more than 700 people attended the 35th reunion in 2003. This year’s theme is “Remember, Rediscover, Reconnect.” A full slate of activities to inform and entertain is being planned by the reunion committee for graduates and their families. A golf tournament, workshops, exhibits and an art and history display are also planned.

“The 40th Anniversary Reunion will be an exciting time for alumni, parents, family and friends as well as RIT/NTID faculty and staff,” says NTID Alumni Relations Director Matthew Driscoll.

For additional information or to register for the reunion, visit: www.rit.edu/ntid/reunion.

The Web site also features video updates which have the latest reunion information presented in American Sign Language with voice-over and captioning.

Sponsorship of NTID’s 40th Anniversary Reunion is provided by Sprint Relay, CSDVRS, Sorenson Communications, New York Relay Service, Eastman Kodak Co. and Advanced Bionics.

Arts & Cultural Council Presents
Community Collaborations: Across Borders Rochester

Successful community collaborations can have enormous benefits to the individuals and organizations involved, and to the community as a whole. But for a collaboration to be successful you have to have the right partners and the right project—and a commitment to the success of the collaboration as a whole.

Across Borders Rochester, a model collaborative effort developed by Memorial Art Gallery and Nazareth College Arts Center to showcase the diversity of Latin American and Latino arts and culture, has all these elements. It was conceived as a way to tie together related events and exhibitions at Nazareth College Arts Center and at the Memorial Art Gallery, but quickly grew to a year-long, community-wide promotional effort, including over 35 events and exhibits at participating organizations across the community, including Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, George Eastman House, Rochester Museum & Science Center, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester.

The Arts & Cultural Council is pleased to have Debora McDell-Hernandez, Memorial Art Gallery’s Coordinator of Community Programs and Outreach; and Rachel DeGuzman, Nazareth College Arts Center’s Marketing and Publicity Manager, speaking about the future of Across Borders, and about other models for community collaborations at our April Networking Event. They will also talk about the next phase of Across Borders which will showcase arts and culture from the eastern hemisphere.
