My advocacy efforts are usually deaf-related, but this time I’m working on something different — trying to establish a skatepark in Brighton.

My son and his friends are avid skateboarders but there is no place for them to skate in Brighton. I’ve been in touch with town officials and feel I can play a part in resolving this problem.

The issue I face is that I am deaf and the people I’ll be working with are hearing. Thus there will be a need for interpreting. But I don’t want to approach people with the attitude, “You have to pay for my interpreter.” I would rather have it be a non-issue. I’d like to be like Marlee Matlin and travel with my own interpreter

Thus the point of this post is to ask if there are any interpreters out there who might like to get involved in this sort of community project as a volunteer. Perhaps there are interpreters who are skateboarders themselves or who have friends or family in the skateboard community or who live in Brighton and want to help improve the town.

It would involve interpreting at various skatepark-related meetings that I attend, maybe a few times a month for around an hour at a time.
