Congressional Candidates Forum for citizens who are deaf or hard-of-hearing

August 22, 2008 · No Comments

On Monday, September 22, WXXI Public Broadcasting Council is sponsoring a Congressional Candidates Forum for citizens who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. All major party candidates from the 25th, 26th, 28th, and 29th Congressional districts are invited to participate.

WXXI is adapting its production procedures to make the forum more accessible to those with hearing loss. In addition, WXXI is “coaching” candidates on how to interact with a deaf and hard-of-hearing audience. WXXI has worked with NTID, Rochester Hearing and Speech Center, the Center for Disability Rights, and the local chapter of the Hearing Loss Association to develop the forum.

The forum is funded, in part, by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Doors open at 7 p.m. at WXXI, 280 State Street, Rochester. Anyone interested in attending should contact Julie Philipp at WXXI’s Center for Public Affairs: jphilipp@wxxi.org or 585-258-0267. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is highly recommended.

Warren R. Goldmann Endowed Scholarship Established at RIT/NTID

August 22, 2008 · No Comments

A college reunion in England two years ago not only helped rekindle friendships, it sparked the formation of a scholarship to help future RIT/NTID students.

The Warren R. Goldmann Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in June by RIT/NTID Associate Professor Warren R. Goldmann and his college friend, Sterling Franklin.

The two friends attended Stanford University and participated in the six-month-long Stanford-in-Britain program in 1966. During a reunion there in 2006, Goldmann mentioned he’d like to start an endowed scholarship at RIT/NTID to help students with hearing loss succeed in college.

“Warren is a great guy,” Franklin said. “I was touched by his eagerness to help NTID students and I wanted him to feel the joy of meeting the scholarship awardees starting in 2008.”

Goldmann said scholarships enabled him to pursue a college education. He wants to help future students have the same opportunities he did.

New Assistant Editor Signs On With DeafROC!

August 22, 2008 · No Comments

As summer winds down and a new year approaches, DeafROC has resumed publication through the efforts of Patrick Harris, who has assumed the role of Assistant Editor.

Patrick, RIT/NTID alumni, whose career has included stints with the Rochester School for the Deaf and the Center for Disability Rights, will be updating DeafROC twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Everyone is welcome to submit news and flyers of any interests to the deaf community of Rochester, N.Y. Please submit flyers as either JPEG or PDF or Word document. Make sure the flyers are in printable format for distributions.

If you send a flyer, please include a text summary in your email. If you only say “here’s the flyer, please post,” then that’s all it will say on DeafROC. It is better if you write up brief event information so we can able to copy and paste it here.

We would love to see more people get involved with DeafROC. If you like to take pictures at events, we would gladly share your photos here on DeafROC. If you are an aspiring videographer, maybe you could create TV-news-style reports that we could post here. If you have your own unique idea, now is the time to speak (or sign) up!

DeafROC is hosted by WordPress, which does not allow paid advertising, so everything we do is provided as a volunteer service to the community. Though there is no money for salaries, it’s a great way to gain experience and help build community spirit. If you would like to get involved, CLICK HERE to send Patrick an email.

Seeking Caption Forum Attendees… Hope you can join!!

August 19, 2008 · No Comments

On September 25, 2008 from 7 to 9 pm, of course during Rochester Deaf Awareness Week, we will have a Closed Caption Forum. We are inviting 4 local News Channels. We will provide refreshments and cash bar after the event. We would like to ask people to dress nice.

If you have not noticed that in many areas our caption is poor. We miss information or it is late. There are information that is not correctly spelled for example… Pittsburgh is written for the town of Pittsford. And many more issues…

For me, I cannot accept this kind of error in our caption in Monroe County. We have a large population in this area and even have NTID in the county. Why are we not getting good caption?

What I am asking for you is to sign up to attend this forum on September 25, 2008 and see some videos we will share with you. And join us at RIT INN at 6:30 pm being ready for 7 pm.

Our goal of this forum is not to attack the News stations, but to learn how we can work with them on improving our captions. We will give the audience opportunities to ask questions.

Right now, I just need a list of people who are interested in attending the event.

As we have limit number of seats available, please email me and let me know you are interested. At the same time, please encourage your friends to email me and be part of this forum as important people will be there and we will be able to discuss anything.

Yes, even the sign language bubble if you really want to see it again.
