Walking after Midnight: Conflict, Community and Restorative Justice

5th Annual Western New York Restorative Justice Conference

October 27–28, 2009

On New Year’s Eve, 1977, Katy Hutchison’s husband, Bob McIntosh, was punched, knocked down, then kicked in the head when he went to check on a neighbor’s loud teen party, held while the parents were out of town. Bob died of massive brain hemorrhaging, leaving Katy alone with four-year-old twins.

From the very earliest days following her husband’s murder, Katy was determined to not be defined by the experience, but rather to find a gift within the pain. During the five years it took to obtain evidence and prosecute the killers, Katy writes that she “developed her perception of the societal forces and lack of understanding amongst young people that created the circumstances leading to Bob’s death.” She committed herself to sharing Bob’s story as a way to educate youth and help them make better choices.

Katy eventually chose to meet the young man who delivered the death blows to her husband. She forgave him, and has even co-presented at restorative justice conferences with him. Katy speaks in schools and correctional facilities around the world, advising and educating youth about the risks of combining young people, alcohol, and a lack of supervision. She promotes restorative justice wherever she goes.

Katy (see photo below) will be our keynote presenter at the Western New York Restorative Justice Coalition Conference, hosted at Brockport University, on October 27-29, 2009. ASL interpretation will be provided for the keynote addresses, and can be requested in advance for all other sessions and events at no charge.
