Items Missing From Yesterday’s Email

September 12, 2008 · No Comments

It has come to our attention that some of the items posted yesterday on DeafROC were not included in the daily email of DeafROC news.

Apparently we posted too many items and there was a limit to how many could be included in the email and some postings got cut off. (The daily email is an automated process.)

Thus we want to call your attention to the following news items that did not appear in yesterday’s email. Click the link to go to the posting.

~ Defense Driving Course in Buffalo on September 20

~ Interpreted Dog Obedience Course at Lollypop Farm (6 wks starting Oct. 15)

~ Parliamentary Procedures Workshop Oct. 18

~ LRAD September Events

~ The Advocate For Housing For the Deaf Seniors, Inc. - which has info on:

Fall Celebration Fund Raiser Catered BBQ on October 5 in Brighton
Fish Fry Dinner on October 10 in Brighton
Deaf Rochester Chicken BBQ on October 18 in Gates

In the future, we will limit the number of daily postings to prevent this from happening again.

New Assistant Editor Signs On With DeafROC!

August 22, 2008 · No Comments

As summer winds down and a new year approaches, DeafROC has resumed publication through the efforts of Patrick Harris, who has assumed the role of Assistant Editor.

Patrick, RIT/NTID alumni, whose career has included stints with the Rochester School for the Deaf and the Center for Disability Rights, will be updating DeafROC twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Everyone is welcome to submit news and flyers of any interests to the deaf community of Rochester, N.Y. Please submit flyers as either JPEG or PDF or Word document. Make sure the flyers are in printable format for distributions.

If you send a flyer, please include a text summary in your email. If you only say “here’s the flyer, please post,” then that’s all it will say on DeafROC. It is better if you write up brief event information so we can able to copy and paste it here.

We would love to see more people get involved with DeafROC. If you like to take pictures at events, we would gladly share your photos here on DeafROC. If you are an aspiring videographer, maybe you could create TV-news-style reports that we could post here. If you have your own unique idea, now is the time to speak (or sign) up!

DeafROC is hosted by WordPress, which does not allow paid advertising, so everything we do is provided as a volunteer service to the community. Though there is no money for salaries, it’s a great way to gain experience and help build community spirit. If you would like to get involved, CLICK HERE to send Patrick an email.

New Editor Needed for DeafROC

June 6, 2008 · No Comments

DeafROC needs a new editor. The old editor no longer has the time or interest to maintain this website. If you would like to take over, send an email to deafroc@aol.com. The old editor will provide training and turn over the whole website to the new editor. Please note that this position is 100% volunteer since DeafROC has no revenue. Thank you.

Discontinuing DeafROC

February 21, 2008 · 16 Comments

endkey.jpg

I started DeafROC five months ago to encourage communication within the local deaf community, but it hasn’t worked.

I am truly amazed by the sheer absence of any feedback or comments left on this blog. Despite dozens of postings on numerous topics, there have been only two comments left here in the past 10 weeks.

For me, the last straw was when I wrote earlier this week seeking input on arts accessibility and was rewarded with ZERO emails or comments.

All I was seeking was some kind of discussion or communication.

For example, the post about Family Fun Day, why couldn’t someone thank the people who ran that event? The post about Greg Livadas, where were all the people saying congrats on the new job? The post about the guy who helped at the multi-car crash, how come no one could say ‘good job’ to him?

Every post I send out seems to end up in a black abyss. It truly makes me feel as if the Rochester deaf community is brain dead. Compare to DeafDC.com, where every post gets numerous comments.

I gave it the old college try, but my life is such that I should not engage in ongoing activities that leave me feeling ignored and unappreciated.

Thus I have decided to discontinue my efforts on this blog and focus my energies on more rewarding endeavors.

UPDATE (Feb. 28th) .. See comment 11.

Sign Up for DeafROC Emails

October 29, 2007 · No Comments

A new feature has been added to DeafROC.com. You can now sign up to receive emails whenever something new has been added to the site. Just click on the link that says “Subscribe to DeafROC by Email” (under SUBSCRIBE at the top of the right column). It will take you to another page where you type in your email address and the special code they give you. Then you will get an email to confirm that you want to be on the list; be sure to click the link in that email to confirm your subscription. Thank you to reader Wendy Dannels for suggesting the addition of this service.

UPDATE: I wasn’t sure how this was going to work, whether the service would send an email each time something new was added, whether they would only send the link, etc.  Now that I’ve signed up, I  see how it works.  They send one email per day with all the full posts from that day along with any illustrations.  It’s pretty neat and I encourage readers to sign up so they won’t miss any news in DeafROC.com.

NEW! Updated List of Deaf Rochester Resources

October 8, 2007 · No Comments

hand-and-mouse.jpg

I couldn’t find a good list of resources for deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Rochester, so I did some research and put one together myself.

To see the list, just click on “Rochester Resources” at the top of the page.

I expect that this resource list will need continuous updating, so feel free to send me any updates or corrections and be sure to let me know if you notice any omissions.
